About the Corcovado National Park

The Park is entirely contained within Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula, whose ecology boats 13 major ecosystems including lowland rain forest, highland cloud forest, jolillo palm forest, mangrove swamp, and varied costal marine habitat. The region is home to an astounding 375 species of birds (perhaps 5-8 endemics), and a mind-numbing array of mammals including over 50 bat species, 100 species of reptiles and amphibians (including 2 crocodilians and 4 sea turtle), over 60 freshwater fish species, and 70 species of marine crab. Mammals we may be lucky enough to encounter include 4 monkey species (squirrel, white-faced capuchin, howler and spider), anteater, sloth, southern river otter, crab-eating raccoon, 6 cat species (ocelot, margay, jaguarundi, tigrillo, jaguar, and the illusive puma), peccary and Baird's tapir. Indeed Corcovado National Park‟s remote location, varied and challenging terrain and exceptional biological intensity has earned it the title of “The Last Frontier”!
