From sunny Devon to Artic Liverpool Land
A BUSINESSMAN man began an arctic expedition last Saturday that will place him in the record books. Phillip Beale, director of Pioneer Expeditions, hopes to accomplish the first crossing of an isolated stretch of Greenland known as Liverpool Land. Mr Beale joins an international group of four intrepid explorers in the attempt to traverse this frozen peninsula for the first time. Pulling sledges weighing over 85kg, they will travel on skis over 75 gruelling miles through mountain terrain on the two week expedition. The team will be faced with a difficult and demanding journey, which Mr Beale says "Should be worth the struggle for the experience of the artic in all its raw natural beauty." The group will endure minus 20 degree camping conditions and upon reaching their finishing point in the south will be pulled out by helicopter. Mr Beale told the Herald: "It's going to be a great challenge both
mentally and physically, but I'm looking forward to what promises to be
an extremely rewarding expedition. |
