Wannabe explorers can now achieve expedition firsts

14th February 2007

PIONEER Expeditions is a new adventure travel company, founded by Lyme Regis-based adventurer Adrian Gray.

The company offers a new approach to travel, letting would-be explorers achieve "extraordinary expedition firsts".

The company's first expedition is to Greenland, to attempt the first ever north-south traverse of Liverpool Land, a large peninsula on the east coast.

The 16-day expedition involves participants travelling on skis and pulling pulks over the 75 miles of polar ice from coast to coast before being pulled out by helicopter.

Along the journey, the group hope to see a number of animals including polar bears, seals, reindeer, walruses and wolves.

Adrian has worked as a tour leader in over 20 countries and said: "What could be more unique than being a participant in an expedition first? "

"The world is full of adventures and challenges, you just need to know where to look. "We want to let everyday people become explorers and experience something really memorable."

The group aims to create and organise original one-off itineraries which take small groups to exotic and little visited destinations with the aim of being the first to achieve a particular objective in an expedition-style adventure holiday.

This could be swimming a volcanic crater, rafting a river from source to sea, scaling unclimbed peaks, trekking a glacier or traversing a jungle clad tropical island.

Adrian founded the company with fellow adventurer Phil Beale and is supported by experienced expedition leaders, Simon Jordan and Steve Bull.

The expedition to Greenland takes place between April 6 and April 21 and is still looking for one or two members. Other expeditions in 2007 include Matsiatra rafting decent in Madagascar, Palawan Explorer in Philippines and Rufiji river safari in Tanzania.
