Komodo Sea Kayaking Adventure

This is a unique expedition where you will paddle your sea kayak to some of the most remote beaches on earth, drifting over magnificent coral reefs, accessing little visited areas, uninhabited islands as well as the island which is inhabited by mythical dragons. One of the best sea kayaking adventures out there! This 10 day expedition from Bal/Jakartai is one of a kind. Our partners are the only operator running kayaking expeditions in the National Park. With the help of an experienced guide, we will paddle between the islands, camp on uninhabited islands with glorious beaches and visit small stilted villages. We will have the chance to swim and snorkel on the most stunning reefs as well as explore the islands by foot. We will walk on Rinca Island to see the dragons – (very close up) – as well as buffalo, deer, monkeys and wild pigs – is an experience you won’t forget! This Komodo Kayaking expedition has a maximum group size of 10 people.

It was a magic holiday, an experience we will never forget. Everybody really enjoyed it and we would definitely recommend it to non-kayakers as well as kayakers. The snorkelling is simply the best I’ve ever seen.

Sea Kayaking Adventure Overview

If you crave adventure and remote places, want to experience cultural immersion and like being in the outdoors, then our Kayaking Komodo expedition is for you. Perfect for those who love a physical challenge but also cherish quiet times of relaxation. You will be escorted around the Komodo National Park by one of our well trained kayaking guides who not only will give you pointers on how to kayak but also inform you on what you are experiencing on the trip. Our objective is to visit the home of the mighty Komodo Dragon. The Komodo Dragon’s sheer size and power is unbelievable, growing more than 3 metres in length and weighing over 150kg. Although they plod along at a leisurely pace, do not be fooled, when called for, the Dragon can run up to 30 kilometres an hour and strike at lightning speed. We will see a number of these magnificent animals at close range – an experience you will not forget. The Komodo Dragon however is just one attraction of the park, you’ll also likely see buffalo, deer, monkeys and wild pigs. We will be visiting uninhabited islands, snorkelling in crystal clear water above pristine coral. The area boasts some of the best marine life on the planet, with dozens of reefs in which we will snorkel. We will visit sites where manta ray and turtle are common. We will visit caves and islands packed with flying fox as well as remote communities that live off the sea. Our nights will be spent beneath the stars on some uninhabited island.

Goa Rangko is a grotto with an amazing clear lake seamed by stalactites and stalagmites.  After some time exploring and swimming in the caves you will sail back to Seture Island, for your first overnight camp and if time permits an evening sunset kayak, which is the perfect way to finish the day.

Day 4: Seture – Pungu Kecil – Pungu Island (B,L,D)

After waking, and an optional early morning swim, you will board the support boat for breakfast before starting your first paddle leg to Pungu Pearl Farm.   After arrival at the white sandy beach of Pungu and enjoying a refreshing ice cold water, the staff will show you how these beautiful products of the sea are grown and sourced at their farm. If you are lucky and it is harvesting time, you will also be able to see the workers harvesting the pearls.  A relaxing paddle through the mangroves will follow your Pearl Farm visit, until you reach Menjerite where you will stop for lunch and some snorkelling.   After lunch you will kayak the beautiful surrounding islands before reaching your overnight camp at Pungu Island.  In the late afternoon, you can choose to snorkel the crystal clear reef just off the beach or spend some more time kayaking around this amazing area. Day 5: Pungu Island- Kukusan – Gado – Warloka – Kaaba (B,L,D)

This morning starts again with the option for an early morning snorkel just off the beach of Pungu Island before breakfast back on the support boat – always a great way to start the day!  Your first paddle of the day will either take you to Kukusan Island or Rinca Village and if school is in, at these villages, you will pay a visit to the students before exploring life on the island. The next leg of kayaking is to Gado –  with its’ wonderful mangroves and some amazing snorkelling in a spot with giant table corals, plenty of fish and turtles, who hopefully swim by to say hello.  After lunch and some more snorkelling you will either paddle or travel on the support boat to a small mangrove island (Kaaba), which is inhabited by bats.  This is a wonderful sight enjoyed from our top deck  – watching thousands of bats flying into the night sky for their evening meal.

Day 6: Rinca – Manta Point – Sebayor Kecil (B,L,D)

You will be shown around the Park by a trained Ranger who will explain the eco-system, the Dragon’s habits and the life of other inhabitants on the island such as the Macaque, Buffalo, Deer, Tree snakes etc.  After your trek and a drink at the Ranger’s Cafe’ you will start heading west on the support boat to Manta Point. One of the highlights of this trip is snorkelling with the manta rays at Manta Point and hopefully, these gracious animals will delight you with their presence. After lunch, you will then start paddling towards Sebayor Kecil for your last beach camp of the expedition.  Sebayor Kecil has a beautiful beach with some great coral reefs and fish population so a spot of snorkelling in the late afternoon or early the next morning is certainly encouraged.

Overnight in Safari style tents. Kayak 10 km and 9km by boat (approximately).

Day 7: Sebayor Kecil – Kanawa – Labuan Bajo (B,L)

After enjoying your last breakfast out in the beautiful Komodo National Park and maybe a swim or snorkel just off the beach you will then make your way paddling through the Mangroves towards Kanawa for one last snorkel and swim before you hit the last open stretch of kayaking.  It will be then time to say goodbye to the crew before you arrive back at the Puri Sari Beach Hotel by mid afternoon (option to return on the support boat if you prefer).

Overnight Hotel.

Day 8: Labuan Bajo – Tado Village – Labuan Bajo (B)

Today you head out for a day at the Cunca Wulang Waterfalls. The falls are just beyond a beautiful traditional village and the hike there and back is extremely picturesque.  The falls, themselves are spectacular, with an enormous fall at one end of a large canyon, which has been carved by the falls themselves. You will be able to swim in the beautiful cool waters all the way to the fall’s base, which is always very welcome, after the trek in.  During the dry season, when the water is low at the waterfall you will visit a local village on this day in place of the waterfall visit. Cecer Village is about a 45 minute drive out of Labuan Bajo and you will be able to spend time wandering through the village learning how the locals live and immerse yourself in the culture and traditions of village life.

Overnight at Hotel.

A really enjoyable new experience!

A new experience for me, one which I really enjoyed. The kayaking was challenging but manageable and the boat was lovely. It was great to be paddling between the islands with fish jumping in front of the kayak and turtles popping up.

One of the most outstanding trips I have ever done!

1. What was the most memorable or exciting part of your holiday?
All of it! Day 4 was probably a stand out, with Komodo dragons in the morning, giant mantas in the afternoon, and a relaxed sunset kayak in the evening. The whole trip was very well organised, a very comfortable support boat, excellent staff, a great mix of activities including time to chill on the boat, and an amazing candle lit evening dinner on the beach.

2. What tips would you give other travellers booking this holiday?
Just book it!
Main essentials are water shoes, cycling gloves, rash vest (you may be able to buy one from them), sunglasses and hat. A few waterproof plasters, and I used a travel towel for my back as a cushion... made life a lot more comfortable in the kayak.

3. Did you feel that your holiday benefited local people, reduced environmental impacts or supported conservation?
Part of the permit for camping involved them having to clean plastic waste from the beaches. All the staff on the boat were locals, so booking keeps them in a job.

4. Finally, how would you rate your holiday overall?
One of the most outstanding trips I have ever done. Loved it.

A real-get-away-from-it-all-trip

A real get-away-from-it-all trip, with fabulous snorkelling reefs, fascinating wildlife and varied scenery. Flori and Matias were excellent guides and the boat crew took great care of us all. Highlights included -seeing the enormous Komodo dragons close up, snorkelling with a manta ray & the amazing reefs (especially at Sebayur Island) and seeing thousands of fruit bats taking to the skies from the mangroves.

The crew were absolutely wonderful. They looked after us so well & did everything they could to make our trip memorable.
This trip met all my expectations, and more! Plenty of activity and sights to see but also plenty of chill time. Amazing staff on the expedition and in the hotels at either end of the trip.

5* review on Komoda Kayaking

Highlight - The fruit bat viewing at dusk, Rinca Island.
They did a great job adapting to some issues that were unavoidable regarding access to the boat they usually used, and had to scramble in order to find another boat to meet their needs. It was a bit cramped for the trip, but everything was still enjoyable.
Wonderful adventure is the world's last Eden.

amazing guide and crew on the support boat. Cannot recommend it highly enough. Wonderful sense of fun and adventure while not feeling too touristy that you were "taking away" from the area.
